During Captain Northup's distinguished careers at sea and on land, he also served Pensacola as a Councilman, as Mayor, and as Collector of Customs and Postmaster under Presidents Roosevelt and Taft.
Northup's son Edwin, continued this tradition after he and his family moved into the house upon Captain Northup's death.
Because Edwin and Louise Northup deeply loved music,the "gatherings" expanded to include a group of musicians and eventually led to the founding of The Pensacola Philharmonic Orchestra in 1926.
