Before it was colonized, the area was inhabited by the Tequesta Native Indian tribe. Afterwards, it was taken over by the Spanish government, and Spain ruled the area for many years until was first properly settled in 1825.

The city was largely built by a female citrus grower Julia Tuttle who was able to see the potential in the area. She was able to bargain with the current railway owners to expand service into the area. From there the city grew in the areas of jobs and citrus exports as other parts of the country were facing cold weather. It was not until 1896 that this area was incorporated as the city of Miami.

The city was strategic during the fight against the Germans in World War II, and with the increase Cuban population, it is now a very vibrant and thriving city.
