Fernandina Beach

Fernandina Beach is located on Amelia Island, the southernmost of an island chain reaching from South Carolina to Florida.

Florida has always delighted visitors with its warm weather and beautiful beaches and this area has the wonderfully warm Florida weather along with charming architecture and a rich history.

This area is known as the Isle of 8 Flags because eight flags have flown over it during its long history.

The area is a delight to visitors who enjoy walking because the city itself is arranged for walking tours and leisurely strolls and as an alternative to walking, charming horse drawn carriages rides can be arranged.

Cars are used and allowed but there are few areas that can boast such suitability for foot travel and biking.

One of the most attractive features of this area, which every visitor comments on, is the warmth with which the year round residents greet them.

Whether saying in a luxury hotel or a quaint bed and breakfast the solicitude of the staff and the friendliness of the year round residents is notable!
Getting on a bike you can easily bike over to Fort Clinch State Park one of the best-preserved civil war forts. There is a six-mile bike trail wending through the park area and of course the wonderful Florida Beaches.

Fort Clinch State Park also features a camp ground if roughing it is more your style, this area is perfect for the nature lover. The nearby Amelia River creates a boundary between the island and the mainland.

The Concours d'Elegance draws many visitors each year and features rare and vintage cars. Car entries are examined for even the minutest flaws and the quality of the restoration as well as the authenticity of the car.

Residents of this sunny island love their festivals, as evidenced by the fact they also host the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, the Chamber Music Festival, and a yearly Film Festival.

This island refuge is home to the shrimp industry and they can be seen from the beaches on the east. The eastern beaches are the area where sea turtles nest in the summer and whales calve in autumn.

When the visitor tires of pristine white beaches and warm sunshine then boating, golfing, and then the adventurous may try a walking tour with a ghost theme sponsored by the island’s museum.

Fernandina Beach provides an amazing change of pace from the fast-paced city life and bustle. Replace the skyscrapers with charming Victorian homes and historic buildings right near the harbor.

The historic area spans nearly 55 blocks with 50 structures lovingly preserved. Many of these historic homes are now host to bed and breakfasts where visitors can retire after a busy day of laying on the beach or exploring the city’s nooks and crannies.

Bikes are an extremely popular mode of transportation for those who want to enjoy the scenery and they can be rented from local bike shops, resorts and sometimes even the Bed and Breakfasts.
