It is a narrow strip on a peninsula in the north, Florida panhandle between Pensacola and Panama City.

A Brief History:
This area is rich in historical history and heritage that dates back to the 7th century a time when it was inhabited by the local Native Americans. Its name is taken from a sea captain by the name of Leonard Destin, who relocated to the area after leaving Connecticut some time in 1845. It is known as the world's luckiest fishing village with an abundance of lush forests and an abundance of natural resources.
It provides the only waterway connection from the Gulf of Mexico to the Choctawhatchee Bay at the East Pass. This pass was actually started when four men used shovels to dig a ditch; the rushing waters did the rest, until the Army Corps of Engineers came along for dredging purposes related to safety. To this day, this city grows and thrives by leaps and bounds. It provides some of the best beach areas in the world as well as a thriving fishing resort community.
Entertainment and Recreation:
There are many things to do while living in or touring this area. For instance, you might enjoy the Run with the Dogs, the Arbor Day Celebration, the Spring Egg Hunt, Memorial Day Ceremonies and 4th of July Fireworks as well as the Independence Day Children's Parade, the Seafood Festival and the Fishing Rodeo, the Christmas Parade and Christmas Boat Parade as well as the New Years Eve Fireworks display.
Stroll along the harbor in the late afternoon to watch the fishing charter boats returning with their catches of the day or perhaps enjoy the glorious night life of the city. Golfing opportunities are well established in the area. Of course, there are various cruises from which to choose if you are in the mood for water travel. Sporting adventures are no uncommon and you may want to go tubing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, skiing, sailing and fishing as well as visit some of the ballparks in the area.
